FROM humble beginnings punting an FC Holden wagon at Adelaide International Raceway to winning the 60th NHRA Nationals in his Rookie year, Richie Crampton has enjoyed a storied drag racing career, and it’s far from over.
Richie’s gig wrenching for Graeme Cowin in Sydney is what first led him Stateside, and after getting a start on the tools with Morgan Lucas Racing, he bided his time until he was offered a seat in Top Fuel.
When Morgan Lucas closed their racing operations in 2016, Richie stayed on building race cars, and currently has an interesting passion project on the go – a crazy ’57 Chevy wagon in which he plans to contest Hot Rod Drag Week later this year.
But Richie has always harboured a desire to pilot a Fuel car on Aussie soil, so when good friend Phil Lamattina offered him a steer of the Fuchs Lubricants car at the Nitro Thunder event at Sydney Dragway, he jumped at it.
We took the opportunity to corner Richie for a chat about his illustrious career, his kick-arse Chevy build, and how he’s enjoying his time Down Under.
